Living with the Crab of Cancer

About the Journey

In this unique time of Saturn and Neptune in Aries, we have an opportunity to deepen into relationship with our animal ancestors and kin, as well as our own multi-faceted creaturely wisdom.

This shape-shifting adventure through the Zodiac weaves together biology, astrology and myth to foster a richly experiential education with the creatures of the constellations themselves. These animals’ stories are offered in their cosmic context so we can see them with fresh eyes and more subtle listening ears, while also opening up more space to make discoveries about our own essential nature and the places in us through which our Circle of Animals — the Zodiac — comes to life.

With self-reflection prompts and experiential processes, you’ll be guided into a participatory engagement with the astrological symbolism and meaning-making from your own direct, lived experience. Here on Earth. In and through your own animal body.

This course is for those who want to really feel their embeddedness within a web of myriad human and other-than-human relations, while also developing a stronger sense of self-reliance and self-confidence through accessing their instinctual core, inner truth and a personal doorway to astrological understanding.

If this work speaks to you, I hope you do respond to this call to dance with our humble and majestic Circle of Animals.

As does the Thema Mundi, birth chart of the world — this journey dawns with Cancer and the Crab

Engage your astrological education in a more full-self way, fostering deeper levels of comprehension through a vibrantly felt-connection of how your individual life is woven by and into, receiving, reflecting and improvising upon, timeless patterns of the universe.

The potential and possibility inherent in each Zodiac Sign is vaster than we can imagine — step into a more participatory role in the building of astrological knowledge.

Re-dream the stories that shape your inner life and our lives together, from the nexus of deep listening, recognition, humility and creative empowerment.

Discover an authentic sense of belonging with humanity across time and space, that’s made possible and enhanced by our remembrance and tending of relationality with the other-than-human world.

Explore artful and relational ways of expressing what’s alive and moving through your internal Circle of Animals, marrying cosmic vision with the body’s genius.

This is the time to abandon humanity-as-separation, and to aid forth the emergence of entirely different stories to live by.

Cancer & the Crab

A creative reimagining of the stories connected to Cancer, through tending conversation with the humble yet might crustacean of our Zodiac.

“Why does everyone keep turning into Crabs?”

It’s a strange sounding question but one we’ve recently gotten into asking, with jokes circulating the internet that everything eventually will turn into … a crab.

These memes originate from the observation that carcinization or “crabbification” — the evolution of a crab-like body plan (i.e. flat shell, tucked tail, round body) — has occurred in separate crustacean lineages, independently of each other. In other words, the crab animal has crawled out of the void on multiple occasions.

So it seems that, if you are a marine animal with a segmented body, exoskeleton and jointed appendages, there is a good chance that you’ll “turn into a crab”.

Is it the ideal form? Probably not. Is it an intelligent response to a particular set of environmental conditions? Yes, it seems likely. What might we learn about our Cancer place and planets, if we apprentice ourselves to the Crab and the context in which this animal appears? What prompts animals to keep becoming crabs?

What led Hera, the Queen of Heaven herself, to place the Crab up in the stars, giving this lowly creature immortal stature as one of our twelve animals of the Zodiac?

  • “Nicole's deep dive into the biology of the crab illuminated so many new facets of the Cancer archetype for me. Being able to embody that biology through expertly guided exercises brought those new facets to life in a very personal way. This learning is so impactful because it places the memory into the body where it can be more deeply experienced, remembered and dreamed forward”

  • “Nicole's Cancer/Crab workshop gave me a deeper perspective on the feeling of being a crab... as a crawling, amphibious creature... well encapsulated in a necessary shell. Giving voice to a mythic part of it was also very powerful and illuminating. Nicole's demeanor is calm, inviting and spacious. I would highly recommend participating in any of her workshops.”

  • “I really resonate with the approach of sinking deeply into the nuances of crab function. It's a holographic dive through a narrow frame that paradoxically expands the nuances of experience. Nicole’s deep knowledge of both biology and astrology have given me new insights into my personal Cancer placements and the archetype of Cancer in general. For example, the guided movement practice was well-paced and its structure helped me truly feel the ‘fall’ of Mars and how to support that part of myself. And a second part of the guided journey helped me understand the role of ancestral memory in Cancer that I hadn’t before considered and will now be able to offer my clients. I highly recommend this class!”

Meet the Instructor

Nicole is an astrologer, artist and parent raising two young humans. Each of these journeys draw her ever more deeply into the question of how to tend a benevolent field of consciousness that’s able to receive a child and foster their incarnation —whether this ’child’ is an actual human child or a creative vision within that wants to be lived out. She approaches experiential astrology as a practice of giving permission, resource and relational container to our many creative instincts, so that these creatures might be felt in the depths of their own essential nature while also re-membered into wider life cycles, rhythms and wholes.

Nicole has been a consulting astrologer since 2017 and has formal training in Biology and Internal Family Systems. She is currently in the final months of final months of the Hermes-Hestia Experiential Astrology Practitioner Program.
